His birth year is uncertain: his headstone reads 1840, the tree gives 1846, and the 1900 census age (50) suggests about 1849-50. His son's 1928 death certificate gives his birthplace as near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A Navarro County, Texas record belongs to another man.
